Tixel Barn
This barn conversion transformed a traditional agricultural building into a striking modern home while carefully preserving its original character. Structural alterations, sympathetic architectural detailing, and high-quality finishes combine to create a contemporary living space that respects the building’s rural heritage.
This project involved the full transformation of a traditional barn into a modern residential home, balancing contemporary living requirements with respect for the building’s original character and heritage.
The conversion began with a bat survey where specialists carried out tests to see whether bats were within the structure. After the all clear was given by the bat specialists, major structural works to make the building suitable for residential use began. Underpinning was required to allow the property to have all the additional structural works to be completed. The wall heights were raised to create sufficient clearance for a first-floor level, allowing for the introduction of an upper storey while maintaining the proportions of the original structure.
To enhance the functionality of the property, a new extension was constructed using complementary brickwork carefully chosen to blend with the original barn materials and surrounding architecture. Alongside this, the project included full underpinning works to ensure long-term structural stability, as well as the installation of new gas, electrics, drainage, and water services throughout the building to meet modern living standards.
Architectural detailing played a key role in preserving the barn’s character. Arched windows and doors were introduced to reflect the original agricultural aesthetic as seen with the original barn doors, ensuring the finished home remained visually sympathetic to its heritage while delivering modern performance and comfort.
Internally, the property was fully plastered to create clean, refined surfaces that contrast beautifully with the building’s traditional form. The project was completed with the installation of a bespoke kitchen featuring stone quartz worktops, adding a natural, tactile finish that perfectly complements the character of the converted barn.
The result is a distinctive modern home that successfully merges historic character with contemporary design, creating a unique living space that feels both timeless and purpose-built.
